The Pink Warehouse in 1916

Love this old Holsinger shot of the the downtown retail/apartment building immortalized as the site of the first concert by Dave Matthews Band (also my temporary home the first few months I moved here to start up 106.1 The Corner)

Starry Nights--Live Music At Veritas Vineyards

What a way to see live music! Hackensaw Boys and Jim Waive performed last Saturday at Veritas Vineyards. A bonfire, a pinic, $15 for a wine glass, and seemingly endless supply of wine, it was wonderful! The backdrop was perfect for bluegrass, Central Virginia style.
If you missed it, you can still catch the Vienna Boys Choir performance or Blues Under the Stars with Little Freddy King and the Chickenhead Blues Band.

Must See Music For The Weekend!

Carey Bell

Its been about two years since we lost the great Carey Bell...(a little background info)
Carey Bell (November 14, 1936 - May 6, 2007[1]) was an American musician who played the harmonica in the musical style of Chicago blues. Bell played harp and bass for other blues icons for decades, including Earl Hooker, Robert Nighthawk, Lowell Fulson, Eddie Taylor, Louisiana Red and Jimmy Dawkins.)
I had the chance to review him for a show in Carolina Beach, I'll never forget him. Quite the charmer he was. I was talking to his bandmate Scott, and Carey turned around, took a swig of his drink, and said "You sho is pretty!". That was all, but you gotta love him.

In honor of Beatles Day...An interesting take....

Update on THE SOUTHERN music venue (just came in my email)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OPENING of THE SOUTHERN CAFÉ & MUSIC HALL Wednesday September 9th, 2009 We are pleased to announce the opening of The Southern Café and Music Hall. The Southern will serve Charlottesville’s need for a small sized music venue and a casual dining and drinking atmosphere. The Southern is located in the ground floor of The Terraces building at 103 South 1st St. on the Downtown Mall. Many people are familiar with this location as the former home of Gravity Lounge. In recognizing the accomplishments and contributions Gravity made to the community, The Southern intends to continue to honor the legacy of great musical artists that came through the room. We also aspire to expand the offerings to embrace a wider and more eclectic variety of artistic endeavors including spoken word, comedy, and theatre. To accomplish this goal, The Southern has increased its capabilities and amenities including upgraded production for the venue, regular café and bar hours, and additional restroom facilities. The café will serve the Downtown Mall with a full menu focusing on lunch and lighter fare and featuring fresh ingredients. The bar will offer a variety of beer, wine, and spirits. We can’t wait to open the doors and have already started filling up the calendar with a bunch of great shows. For the current schedule and ticketing information, please visit our website: http://thesoutherncville.com Make sure to bookmark the site and check back often, as many more shows will be posted in the coming days, weeks, and months. Our full website will be launching soon with more information, so stay tuned. Unfortunately, as much as we can’t wait to get the ball rolling, there’s still some dust that needs to settle before we can even ask you to pardon it and to that end, we’ve had to relocate our first few shows currently scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 18th, 19th, and 20th. Our friends at the Fry’s Spring Beach Club have graciously agreed to host these shows and as sad as we are to have to move these shows, we can’t imagine a better place to host them. Thanks for bearing with us through this and we can’t wait to see you at these greats shows and many more to come! Is is bad that I am already thinking about what to wear for Halloween?
If I can get Phillip or my sister involved, this is the plan.

Ray LaMontagne

One of my interns was listening to the station and fell in love with Ray LaMontagne's "Trouble". It made me happy hearing that, because I forgot how powerful it was when I first heard that album. We listened to it over and over, and even drove from Wilmington NC to Cary NC just to see him perform it live. Falling in love with an album like that, you can't help but get a little desensitized to it after a while. It was so good to hear how wonderful it was through the ears of someone else. Love it.

TABLOIDS

So, I love hip hop. I don't always love some of the hip hop I hear these days, mainly because I think the influence has gotten pretty narrow. Instead of being influenced by blues, jazz, whatever, some modern day hip hop is just influenced by other hip hop. There are notable exeptions, and Tab One falls into that category. (Full disclosure, he is an old friend of ours). BUT, friend or not, he took Iron and Wine's "Boy With a Coin" as the beat for a new song on his Tabloids album, and I couldn't be more impressed. THAT is what hip hop is about, innovation and creativity.
Download it here, thank me later :)

Making Pies

So Sunday I promised I would make a pie, which of course requires a major time committment, a very large mess that spreads to the den, and a soundtrack. Making Pies, Patty Griffin. Check out my fabulous cherry pie!

Back to School--September Movies From John Hughes

Just got this in my email....Sounds fun! Let's go! CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (August 24, 2009): The Paramount Theater is paying tribute to the recent passing of writer/director/producer John Hughes. Come enjoy some great flicks on the largest screen in Central Virginia. This month’s theme of “Back To School” will be its own tribute to John Hughes. Hughes' movies did as much to define and embody that particular cultural era as any other body of work, and they've left an indelible stamp on several generations. Enjoy concessions, including cold beer and wine, popcorn, and candy, in the theater during the broadcast! More details can be found on our website http://www.theparamount.net/. All movies are at 7 and 9 pm 9/14 - Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 9/21 - Pretty In Pink 9/28 - The Breakfast Club

UVA Convocation

Occasionally my work life and my personal life meet and I have the chance to attend an event as an attendee, while covering it for news. That was the case with the University of Virginia Convocation Opening Ceremony last Sunday night. Phillip just transferred to UVA, so I taped the ceremony for news, and attended to support him. Here are some photos of the event.

Brew Ridge Trail Music Festival

What a success! Neither rain nor gusty winds kept away fans and beer drinkers. Nelson County--wow! Such a beautiful drive to get down there! The Devil's Backbone Brewing Company did a great job dealing with all of those people--we have a really great meal there on the porch while listening to some Sons of Bill. Perfect. I'm already looking forward to the next one! Best thing? Proceeds went to the Lovingston Opry.

Chick Tragic and The Roosters

Ok, so i almost fell out of my chair the first time I heard Carleigh Nesbit sing on a song called "The Way I Got You Wantin' Me" (check out the youtube video below and you'll understand). For her few years, she sure does have some soul. Carl Anderson and the rest of the crew round out that voice, and I'd go on record to say they are one of my favorite up-and-coming local bands. The stopped in the studio not too long ago, and I jumped into the group shot with them. I've dropped a link below to the myspace page-- I think that may be the best place to see where they are playing and check out their videos, so on. Enjoy, and check them out while you can still say "I knew them when..."

I'm ALIVE!!!

Resurfacing after the strep. Thanks for all the well-wishing. No longer contagious. Not that you could have gotten it from, you know, listening to me on the radio. But still :)

BEATALLICA

Seriously. Beatallica.
As in a band that plays Beatles lyrics in Metallica style and vice versa.
Love it, love it, love it.

Dar Williams In the Corner Lounge

I love Dar Williams. I even forgive her for that album cover where she has the blue tongue. She is super sweet and gave Jeff a great interview and a couple of cool songs for our stash.
Here she is in the Corner Lounge! And the blue tongue cover, just for fun.
Don't forget to check her out tonight at IS Venue.

Missed Opportunities

So Justin Townes Earle came into the Corner Lounge on Sunday.
Early.
Early enough that I missed him by ten minutes. Jeff even tried to stall him a bit for me, but no avail.
Sigh.
The show ROCKED though!
Here's some pics of us watching it at the Pavilion on a sweaty C-ville night.

Work Day Wrap Up Grand Finale

This is my last day moonlighting for Sweatman on the Last Letter Game for a while since Brad and Melissa come back from Colorado this weekend. I'm a little sad about it, cause its so fun to actually get to talk to everybody about what they want to hear, and lots of times, why they want to hear it. It's Friday, and my brain-fried-end-of-the-week-friendly-theme is S songs. So hit me up! S-song away!

Ol' Dirty Bingo

Ok, put this one under one of the million reasons i love this town.
I found this posting on nailgun media's blog, one of my favorite local music sites.
People here are actually playing Ol' Dirty Bingo.
And donating the money they raise to charity.
God love 'em.
